HISTORY : The Kerala State Rifle Association, affiliated to National Rifle Association of India was established in 1955, with the objective of promoting shooting sports amongst regional sports enthusiasts.
KSRA is an independent body registered under the Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act 1955. The Association works with an aim to develop and support shooting sport in the state. The Association holds the authority to affiliate district level associations as well as rifle clubs within the state. The association is of multi dimension management with its governing body consisting of Ex-officio members as well elected members. The honorary general secretary shall hold the administrative charge of day to day affairs of the association. The President is the final authoritarian of the Association in all such matters concerned.
It was in 1956, the then Government – Travancore – Cochin Government – issued guidelines for the formation of Rifle Clubs in the State vide Memorandum No.28258/54/CS Home Section and the District Collectors and Inspector General of Police were directed to follow the line of action laid down in the memorandum. In Para-1 of this memorandum, it says “The District Collector and the D.S.P should be the President and Vice Presidents of the clubs respectively ….”. As such Rifle Clubs were started functioning in the State under the auspices of Government.
By the new rules such framed. The Rule 1 is, “The President and Vice President of the Rifle Club in each district shall be the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police respectively”.

The Kerala State Rifle Association, which is the apex body of all District Rifle Associations in the State, was formed in 1965 and affiliated to the National Rifle Association of India. The objective of the association among others is to train the people of the State of Kerala in safe and efficient handling of small arms, especially rifles and shotguns for sports and marksmanship as well as for the service at the time of national emergency. Another important objective is that, to encourage the establishment of Rifle Clubs and District Rifle Associations affiliated to the association and to regulate and coordinate its activities in the State of Kerala. The state association helps the District Associations to procure arms and ammunition required for the practice of shooters from NRAI at subsidised rates. Inspector General of Police (HQ) is the Ex-officio President of the Kerala State Rifle Association from the very beginning itself. After the promulgation of Kerala Sports Rules 2008, which mandated every sport organisations in the State to be registered under the Sports Council, the Association was registered under the Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act 1955 as No. A-426/2008 and affiliated to the Kerala State Sports Council.
